3) Zappos.com: Winning through corporate culture

They’ve all drunk the Kool-Aid at Zappos and the result had been steady double-digit revenue growth ($1 billion in sales in 2008); frequent mentions in the business press (”most innovative companies” (Fast Company); “100 Best Companies to Work For” (Fortune)), laudatory profiles on Oprah and Nightline and a recent cameo on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice. One might think Zappos’ workers will eventually tire of the gaiety with which they are expected to greet visitors  (think of the “flair” scene from Office Space) but the camaraderie seems genuine. And softspoken CEO Tony Hsieh is the real deal — what Jim Collins, in his seminal Good to Great, called the rare “Level 5″ leader who combines intense ambition for the company with personal humility.
